Seasonality:
The Cardinal artichoke is the latest addition to the artichoke family. The Pouliquen Group has been marketing it since 2013. It is large and fleshy and has a beautiful purple colour which is similar to that of the baby purple artichoke. Its head is round and firm and its leaves are thick. It has a soft, sweet taste and a soft centre. It has everything you want in an artichoke! The Cardinal artichoke was also awarded a silver Sival in 2015 (varietal innovation category), proof of its originality and quality.
Cultivating the Cardinal artichoke
The Cardinal artichoke is planted in May and June and at the end of the year. Like its counterparts, it has two harvests a year: in May and June and in September and October. It is harvested by hand, in bulk. The producers then select and pack the artichokes before delivery to the cooperatives where another quality control is carried out. Artichokes are delivered and refrigerated on the same day they are harvested.
After delivery, we recommend that you store the artichokes in a cold room until they are presented to the final consumer or are cooked. In order to avoid oxidation of the vegetables, it is best to keep the stems in place until you are ready to eat them.
The soil in Northern Brittany, its climate and the generational expertise of the producers combine to guarantee very high quality products.
500 producers
The artichoke is one of Prince de Bretagne’s star vegetables. For all artichokes, the Pouliquen Group works with more than 500 producers spread over Northern Brittany. They are members of the SICA (North Finistère) and Les Maraîchers d’Armor (Côtes d’Armor) cooperatives.
