The red kuri squash

  • Potiron

Seasonality:

The red kuri squash belongs to the cucurbitaceae family, which includes more than 800 species. It is round and slightly tear-drop shaped. Its colour ranges from orange to brick red. Each fruit weighs between 1 kg and 3 kg on average. The red kuri squash is soft and sweet with a distinctive chestnut flavour. Its flesh is thick and creamy. Like pumpkins or marrows, red kuri squash can be eaten in many ways: in soups gratins, pies or quiches. You don’t need to remove the skin before cooking.

Red kuri squash has a higher nutritional value than pumpkin and can be stored for a long time in a cool, dry place. The length of storage time does not alter its taste or nutritional properties, quite the opposite!

Cultivating the red kuri squash

Red kuri squash are planted mechanically in spring, in April and May. They are harvested when the leaves begin to dry out, in September and October. They are harvested by hand, in bulk. Red kuri squash are then packed by the producers on their farms or in a SICA warehouse, from September to March. Red kuri squash are sold in the same period.

Our producers

The Pouliquen Group is loyal to its producers. More than just suppliers, they are our partners. Some partnerships go back decades, while others are more recent. All the red kuri squash producers we work with are members of the agricultural cooperatives SICA (Finistère) or Les Maraîchers d’Armor (Côtes d’Armor). Their products are marketed under the Prince de Bretagne brand.
